Over a few drinks, former Coronation Street actress Suranne Jones with close friend, and former-colleague Sally Lindsay discussed the idea of a female-lead police drama, with the initial idea of Jones and Lindsay playing a crime-fighting duo similar to that of 80s American hit "Cagney and Lacey". However, when the idea was taken up by Red Productions and ITV, Sally Lindsay was unable to film due to pregnancy, and the part was rewritten for Lesley Sharp to take on the role. Three years down the line and Scott and Bailey is fast-becoming one of the UK's favourite crime dramas, with nominations at the BAFTAs, a BAFTA Television Craft award for writer Sally Wainwright, and a fourth series commissioned for 2014 after the Series 3 finale brought in an average of 7.2 million viewers.
